Parting Gift

[New Mission: Undead revelations]

As the hostess stopped talking, a brief silence filled the room, and they exchanged a knowing glance.

“Undead? What did she mean by that?” asked Crete. “I wonder if it means we might have to fight a different fight.”

“Now where did I see the phoenix before? Oh, wait, I recall now. Do you guys recall that neon sign with the flaming bird?” said Jace.

“Oh, you are right. And you are telling us about it now?” asked Crete.

“N, you have had encounters with the undead, right?” asked Jace.

“With zombies, yes. But not every undead is the same.”

“What if these were, say, not zombies? But, say something else, say vampires?”

“Buddy, zombies and vampires are not even in the same league,” said Crete. “Zombies are not fast or cunning. Vampires are way beyond any regular human.”

“I think we can deal with anything and anyone. I only see this as one more challenge. We just need to accept it and defeat the boss to complete the mission,” said Dilara.

“Dilara, I wish I had your optimism or your confidence. But may I ask you if you have encountered vampires before?”

“No, not really. But I am sure we’ll find a way when we look for clues. It’s all a game, right?”

“I hate to break it to you, Dilara. It might seem like a game, but people can die in it too,” said N.

“If they are like in the movies, then sunlight or a stake should do it, right?” said Dilara.

“As if things are ever so simple,” said N. “When I encountered zombies, I realized they had nothing to do with the way they are depicted in the movies. The ones I dealt with were intelligent and didn’t even walk strangely. They tried to bite everyone, though,” said N.

“And now for a proper question: where is Paul?” asked Jace. “We can’t do anything without him.”

“Let me check his locator beacon,” said Dilara. “Okay. Let’s see, it says he is nearby.”

“That’s weird. Why would he just leave like that?” said Crete. “Unless…”

Before he could continue, the hall was engulfed in darkness, exposing them to an eerie stillness.

“Hey, who turned the lights off?” yelled someone from one of the nearby tables.

“What now?” said Crete.

Surrounded by pitch black darkness, Thing’s piercing cry echoed through the air, accompanied by sporadic flashes of light with people whispering in hushed tones. Bo couldn’t contain his excitement and let out a howl following Thing.

Then there was a flash and the sound of thunder. The feeling of lightning striking nearby seemed illogical, since they were gathered in a hall, but that is how it felt.

In the after-light, Jace thought he glimpsed something floating in the air, flying fast towards them. In moments, he felt the cold air as the creature swished past him. Bo jumped and growled, snapping his jaws in frustration.

“Easy does it, little guy,” said Jace. But before he could say anything more, something grabbed him from behind. He tried hard to get away, but his failed attempts at resistance became painfully obvious as he felt the piercing sensation of claws scraping against his neck.
